Alley Cat Allies,is the only national advocacy organization dedicated to the protection and humane treatment of cats. Founded in 1990, Alley Cat Allies has more than 600,000 supporters and helps tens of thousands of individuals, communities and organizations save and improve the lives of millions of cats and kittens nationwide In August 2016, Baton Rouge, Louisiana and surrounding parishes were completely flooded. Alley Cat Allies provided expertise, resources and funding for disaster relief efforts. The funding supported direct rescue and care and helped cover costs of equipment and supplies. Alley Cat Allies also sent a team to assist those on the ground. Alley Cat Allies has a history of assisting in Louisiana since Hurricane Katrina and has actively worked to establish lifesaving programs there ever since. When the Australian government declared a 2020 goal of killing two million cats (shooting, poisoning, and lethal trapping of community cats) Alley Cat Allies president and founder Becky Robinson traveled across Australia advocating against the plan. She met with scientists who explained that habitat destruction, not cats, causes the extinction of species. In April 2015, Texas veterinarian Kristen Lindsey posted a picture of herself on Facebook holding a cat by an arrow through the cat's head, bragging about the kill. Due to lack of evidence, she was not charged with animal cruelty. Alley Cat Allies is fighting to ensure that she never practices again.
