Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) Like so many Katrina victims, Lenneice Morrell was forced to leave her three dogs behind when rescue boats came to her flooded New Orleans home. When she finally returned, she found two of her dogs hadn't survived, but the third, Sir Romeo, was missing. While Lenneice searched the Internet for Sir Romeo, he was being cared for by United Animal Nations' Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) volunteers. The sad black Lab was emaciated and sickly. He had chemical burns from the floodwaters. Dejected, he curled up at the back of his kennel and rarely budged. But eventually, thanks to the love, attention and comfort of EARS volunteers, Sir Romeo began to heal from his ordeal. Months later, a volunteer in Australia matched Lenneice's lost dog posting with Sir Romeo's found dog posting. Because Lenneice was still in temporary housing, an EARS foster family agreed to care for Sir Romeo. At Christmas, an EARS volunteer who had also fallen for Sir Romeo arranged for Lenneice to visit him. When Lenneice saw him, the tears started flowing. She said 'Romie!' and he put his head in her lap, like he had been waiting for her all along. After so much loss and devastation, Lenneice and Romie were finally at peace. The story of Lenneice and Sir Romeo is just one of thousands that UAN has encountered since 1988, when it began sending in the EARS team to help ensure the survival of disaster's most innocent victims.
