PCRM protects animals by developing and promoting alternatives to animal experiments. We also promote disease prevention through research and education programs about diet and lifestyle.

Twelve frightened dogs were warehoused and waiting to be shipped to the lab at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Inside, a group of nervous medical students were preparing to practice surgical techniques and then kill the dogs. This terrible, unnecessary lab session had taken place for years--not only at UVa--but at medical schools throughout the US.

Thanks to your donations, PCRM was able to put intense pressure on UVa and they recently announced an end to experiments on live dogs for medical training. Each year the lives of 96 dogs will be spared--at just this one medical school! As a result of PCRM's outreach--funded by your donations--approximately 100 of the 126 medical schools in the US have replaced their live animal laboratories in favor of modern, humane alternatives.

Still, over six million animals are killed each year for educational purposes. PCRM works with high schools, universities, and medical schools to promote alternatives to traditional animal-based learning methods. We also focus heavily on ATLS courses, which often use live dogs to demonstrate highly invasive procedures, ultimately killing the animals. We've been able to promote humane, nonanimal learning methods that meet educational goals and allow for compassion and respect for life in all forms.
