During an undercover investigation of the Buckshire Corporation—one of America's largest breeders of animals for experimentation—PETA discovered that chimpanzees were languishing in a dark, windowless basement. Separated from each other by the bars of their cramped, barren metal cages, the chimpanzees were deprived of companionship, fresh air, exercise, and mental stimulation. Females used as breeders suffered the emotional pain of having their babies taken away from them shortly after birth. Many of the chimpanzees were leased to laboratories for experiments and underwent repeated, painful liver biopsies for more than two decades. PETA presented the evidence from our investigation to the U.S. government, and Buckshire was charged with violations of federal law and fined $25,000. The company slowly began to dispose of the chimpanzees it had held captive for so long. When Buckshire finally agreed to release its last remaining chimpanzee prisoners, PETA helped fund the construction of a special sanctuary for them. Annie (pictured here) and the others now play, climb, and nap together and enjoy healthy food, sunshine, and fresh air. Never again will they be separated from their friends or be harmed. Your support helps PETA's campaign to abolish animal experiments in favor of sophisticated, non-animal research methods, which are more relevant to human health.
