Whoosh. The whisper-soft sound of the eagle's wings carries across the metal building. Less than a foot away from where we stand, Challenger, a trained non-releasable bald eagle, flies by in a practice session. Watching the majestic bird brings chills and stirs the most intense patriotic feelings. Apparently that reaction is common. Al Cecere, founder and president of the American Eagle Foundation (AEF) in Pigeon Forge, takes Challenger across the country to perform at major events during the national anthem. He sees this patriotic emotion all the time. "People everywhere respond the same way," Al says. "It's a powerful experience and crosses all human boundaries, all demographics. Challenger's able to reach the heart and soul of everyone. "The eagle has a lot of different meanings to Americans," he continues, "but in general, to all of us, it represents the freedoms that this country has stood for since the beginning, and that many people have fought and died for." Through its work, such as taking Challenger on the road, the AEF raises awareness to save eagles and other birds of prey.
