During his freshman year Jes began having seizures. After further medical examination Jes was diagnosed with epilepsy. The doctors recommended that he put his college career on hold. Jes was heartbroken and frightened. He had been blind since age 5 and had done well in learning his way in a sighted world. But now to add this new disability to his life was devastating. Jes along with his mother contacted Guiding Eyes for the Blind; where they had obtained Jes' fantastic guide dog Harley three years earlier. GEB contacted Service Dogs for America with a question. Could this 5 year old Labrador guide dog be cross trained to intervene with seizures? GEB sent two veteran trainers along with Harley to our Service Dogs for America training facilities in North Dakota. This was a wonderful experience for everyone involved. GEB trainers were impressed with the open-minded approach that Service Dogs for America implements at its facility. In the early morning hours of February 7th, 2006 Goehring and GEB trainer Graham Buck travelled to North Carolina in order to return "Harley". "Harley" was now was a cross trained Guide / Emergency Medical Response Dog. Today Jes and Harley are back in college.
